 Block Captain Meeting Minutes

Feb 18 2010

1.       Officer Ramos passed around a sheet of paper for people in his area to write down their concerns.

2.       Award given for Winter Wonderland to Senior Lead Officers and Community Relations Officers, and a special award was given to SLO Heidi Llanes for her extraordinary efforts.

3.       Officer Madison said Captain Jon Peters will be at next meeting because something came up tonight.

4.       Marlene Morgenstern from the Police Commission (Civilian Investigator) spoke about Charitable Organizations and solicitors and the need to verify legitimacy before giving them money.

a.       $220 Billion in charity donations were claimed in 2009 in CA

b.      160,000 charities in CA

c.       Reviewed sample information card and information sheet (attached)

d.      Discussed endorsed charities that must meet financial scrutiny/audits and are overseen by the commission closely.  Considering adding the endorsed list to their website; have it in print if you request it now.

5.       Marisa spoke about the Census – 10 question form being sent out by March 15. If you do not respond people will be coming to your door between April 1-30.

6.       Officer Delatori spoke about the community relations.  32914@lapd.lacity.org

a.       Youth groups 9-13 year old program – meet weekly on Weds. 

b.      Outreach – Nixle Program  - 800 people are signed up so far.  Purpose is to send out instantaneous alerts (email, text or web messages) to those signed up.  Cyndi will email the information sheets.  You can also sign up to receive alerts for other areas across the nation (kids in college, parents on opposite coast, etc.).

c.       Need volunteers for the Carnival on March 19, 20, 21.  Money from the Carnival will go to the youth groups.  Tickets on sale 50% off now - $20 for sheet of ten ride tickets.

d.      Westchester Golf Tournament Save the Date flyers discussed.

7.       May 13 is next Block Captain meeting

8.       Citizens Academy discussed by Cyndi & info sheet, application is attached

9.       Monica handed out flyers for the Council Budget Meeting on Monday Feb 23 to get participation on behalf of the LAPD.

POST MEETING CORRECTION

From Marlene Morgenstern: According to the ordinance, children under age 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

For the LAUSD, children K-6 cannot solicit on the street or door-to-door. Our ordinance requires children under 10 years old to be accompanied by an adult and prohibits those under 16 to solicit between sunset and 9 a.m.
