Why should YOU get involved in the Mar Vista Community Council (MVCC)? Because the MVCC was created by Los Angeles’ voters and the City Council to:
· Help maintain the quality of life – and property values – in YOUR community
· Keep you informed about upcoming issues that may affect YOU and the community
· Improve communications between YOUR community and city government
· Advocate on behalf of YOUR community on issues of importance
What is the Mar Vista Community Council? The MVCC is a city-certified association of community stakeholders – that is residents, workers and property owners within the MVCC boundaries. Its purpose is to act as a liaison between city government and the community.
What are the MVCC boundaries? They are – roughly – from Walgrove on the west, to Overland on the east, and from Washington Place on the south to the Santa Monica Freeway on the north. For specific information, please consult the map on our Web site at www.marvistacc.com.
How is the MVCC governed? A 13-member Board of Directors, elected by stakeholders who are 18 or older, governs the MVCC. Stakeholders who are 18 or older can run for a seat on the Board if they obtain the signatures of 20 other stakeholders.
Will the MVCC have any real clout? Yes! The MVCC is an official arm of city government. It can review the city budget and suggest priorities. Although the MVCC is advisory only, it will have clout with public officials because it represents tens of thousands of individuals, as well as homeowner associations and a variety of business groups, religious and educational institutions, service clubs, etc.
What does it cost to become a stakeholder? Absolutely nothing. The MVCC is run by volunteers, and the city funds the Council’s operating expenses.
What can MVCC members do? Participate in MVCC meetings (7 PM on the second Tuesday of each month at Mar Vista Park), vote for members of the Board of Directors, run for a seat on the Board of Directors and/or volunteer to help on a variety of small, short-term projects.
